Keynote Synopsis
With all the emphasis on Project Management processes and process improvement, it can be easy to forget that the purpose of any project is to “… create a unique product or service.” As a result, Project Management discussions too frequently revolve more around which process is best, how to optimize the process steps, how to be more agile, how to scale the process to the enterprise, etc. rather than how to best create the optimum product and service to meet the customer and end user needs.

While process implementation and process improvement are important, they should be treated as the means to the end and not the end itself. This presentation will discuss several well-known Project Management “Sacred Cows” and show in each case how focusing on product business attributes, particularly the degree of required innovation, can help streamline project planning, optimize project benefit realization and strengthen project portfolio management. Examples will be given of how the product focused project management concepts were used to facilitate the successful deployment of enterprise PMO structures across 12 global business units within a $14B electronic company with very different markets, customers and business models.
